Origins of a humble tool

Ancient Egyptians used the Reed Pen as early as 3200AD. The Quill Pen came about in the west around the 6th century. Another popular item was the metal nib Dip Pens which came about around 43AD and was common till as recently as the 1950s to the 1960s

Al-Mu'izz li-Din (953 to 975) the ruler of Egypt requested in his time for a pen that did not leak and thereafter was made the first known version of a Fountain Pen

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519) the Italian polymath drew a Fountain Pen design in his journal and probably used a working Fountain Pen for his writings

Evolution

The BallPoint

John J. Loud patented an early version for a ballpoint pen in 1888

Laszlo Biro came up with his version, by combining the ball socket mechanism with a oil-based ink. That began the story of ballpoints.

Marcel Bich used Biro's design as a basis to manufacture reliable writing tools that will then eventually become readily available to the masses, completely changing how people write, study and work.
